Activewear buying guide: fit, fabric and value

Good activewear should fit well, last and suit what you actually do. Here's what to look for before you buy.
1. Fit
Try moving in it: squat, stretch, reach. Check waistbands stay put and seams don't rub. Sizes vary between brands, so check each brand's size chart.
2. Fabric
- Synthetic blends dry quickly and stretch.
- Cotton is soft but holds moisture.
- Check the label for the fibre mix. For leggings, test opacity with a stretch in good light.
3. Match it to the activity
Yoga, running and gym work put different demands on clothes. Buy for what you do most.
4. Value
A cheaper piece that bobbles or loses stretch quickly isn't good value. Look at stitching, read care instructions and follow them to make things last.
5. Returns
Check the return policy, especially for online orders and sale items. Your consumer guarantees apply if an item is faulty, whatever the store's policy says.
The short version
- Move in it before you commit.
- Check the fibre mix and opacity.
- Buy for your main activity.
- Know the return policy and your rights.
We don't list prices here, because they change and differ by state. Check the retailer's own site for current prices.
