Back-to-school checklist (stationery, bags and shoes only)

Getting ready for a new school year can feel like a lot. A checklist helps you buy what's needed, and skip what isn't.
1. Start with the school's list
Most schools send out a stationery or booklist. Use it as your guide, and check whether the school sells a pack directly. Don't buy extras until you've seen what's required.
2. Check what you already have
Go through last year's pencil case and desk drawer. Pencils, rulers, scissors and glue sticks often have another year in them.
3. Stationery tips
Compare multi-packs by the price per item, not just the pack price. Label everything with your child's name. Keep a few spares at home for mid-year top-ups.
4. Choosing a school bag
Look for a bag that's the right size for your child, with padded, adjustable shoulder straps. A chest strap can help keep it in place. Check the zips and stitching, and whether it fits the lunchbox and drink bottle. Pack it lightly and wear it on both shoulders.
5. Buying school shoes
Check your school's uniform rules first, as many have colour or style requirements. Get feet measured if you can, as kids' feet grow quickly. Try shoes on later in the day, with school socks, and leave a little room at the toe. Velcro can be easier for younger kids.
6. Spread the cost
Watch for back-to-school sales over the summer holidays, and buy early where you can. Check warranty and returns, especially on bags and shoes.
