The lowest fare on an airline's site often only includes carry-on. That can be great if you pack light, but the rules differ between airlines and change over time. Here's what the main Australian airlines say, as at 25 October 2026 (Melbourne time). Always check your own booking.
1. Jetstar
- Flights before 2 February 2027: Starter fares include two carry-on items with a combined 7kg: one main item (max 56 x 36 x 23cm) and one small item that fits under the seat.
- Jetstar Airways (JQ) flights from 2 February 2027: Jetstar says all bookings include one underseat bag (max 40 x 30 x 20cm). An overhead bag comes with Priority Carry-on, either as an upgrade or in select bundles. No single bag can weigh over 10kg.
- Checked baggage isn't included in Starter fares, but can be bought.
- Jetstar says fees apply at the airport if you're over your allowance.
2. Virgin Australia
- Economy Lite includes 8kg of carry-on: one standard bag (max 56 x 36 x 23cm) plus one personal item (max 45 x 33 x 20cm).
- Checked baggage isn't included on Lite, but is available to buy.
- Standard seat selection is available to buy on Lite, or free within 3 hours of departure, subject to availability.
3. Qantas
Qantas and QantasLink domestic fares include checked baggage, with the allowance shown at booking. Its carry-on allowance depends on the route, cabin and aircraft. On QantasLink Dash 8 Q400 flights, for example, it's 1 overhead bag and 1 personal item, 7kg maximum.
4. Tips to avoid surprises
- Check your allowance in Manage booking before you fly.
- Weigh and measure your bag at home.
- Mixing airlines? Pack to the lowest allowance.
- If you'll need a checked bag, add it online beforehand.
Key takeaways
- "Carry-on only" means different things at different airlines.
- Jetstar's JQ rules change from 2 February 2027.
- Add the cost of bags and seats when comparing fares.
We don't list fares here, because they change all the time. Check the airline's own website for current fares and conditions.
