Cloud storage plans compared: what to look for

Cloud storage keeps copies of your photos and files on a provider's servers so you can reach them anywhere. Plans look similar, but the details differ.

1. Work out how much space you need

Check how much your photos, videos and documents take up now, and allow room to grow. Paying for far more than you'll use isn't a bargain.

2. Sync isn't the same as backup

Many services sync, so if you delete or change a file on one device, it changes everywhere. Check whether the plan keeps deleted files and older versions, and for how long. That's what saves you from accidents and some ransomware.

3. Privacy and security

  • Turn on multi-factor authentication.
  • Read the privacy policy: where is data stored, and who can access it?
  • Some services offer end-to-end encryption, where the provider can't read your files. Check whether it's on by default.

4. Sharing and families

If you share with family, check whether plans allow multiple users and how sharing permissions work.

5. Getting your data out

Check how easy it is to download everything if you leave, and what happens to your files if you stop paying. Read the cancellation terms before you sign up.

The short version

  • Size the plan to what you actually use.
  • Look for version history and deleted-file recovery.
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication.
  • Check privacy, sharing and how to leave.

We don't list prices here, because they change and differ by state. Check the provider's own site for current prices and plans.
