Flying from a regional airport: how to plan your connections

Plenty of Aussies don't live near a capital-city airport. Flying from a regional airport can save a long drive, but it takes a bit more planning. Here's how to work out your options. We don't rank routes here, because services change. Check each airline's route map for what flies from your airport now.
1. Find out who flies from your airport
Start with your airport's own website, which usually lists airlines and destinations. Then check each airline's site. Regional routes may be run by smaller carriers or by partner airlines. Virgin Australia, for example, lists some domestic flights operated by Link Airways.
2. Book connections on one booking where you can
If you're connecting through a capital city, booking the whole trip on one booking is generally simpler than separate tickets. If something is delayed, separate bookings can leave you sorting it out yourself. Check the airline's conditions of carriage for how it handles connections.
3. Check the aircraft and the baggage rules
Smaller aircraft can have tighter carry-on rules. Qantas says that on QantasLink Dash 8 Q400 flights small wheelie bags don't fit overhead and will be collected at boarding, and strollers can't go on as carry-on on Dash 8 or Embraer E190 aircraft. If your trip mixes airlines, Qantas recommends packing to the lowest allowance.
4. Compare the drive with the flight
Sometimes driving to a bigger airport works out better, and sometimes it doesn't. Add up fuel, parking or transfers, time, and any overnight stay before you decide.
5. Leave a buffer
Regional services can run less often, so a missed connection may mean a longer wait. Give yourself time between flights if you're on separate bookings.
