Indoor plants that are hard to kill, and where to buy them online

Some indoor plants are more forgiving than others. None is truly unkillable, but a few cope well with missed waterings and less-than-perfect light. Here's what to look for, and how to buy plants online.
1. Plants with an easy-going reputation
Plants often suggested for beginners include snake plants, ZZ plants, pothos, peace lilies and cast iron plants. They generally put up with lower light and the odd missed watering. Check the care label for the plant you buy.
2. Match the plant to your light
Look at where the plant will live. Bright, indirect light suits many indoor plants. Harsh afternoon sun through glass can scorch leaves. Low-light spots need plants known to cope with them.
3. Water less, not more
Overwatering is a common way to lose an indoor plant. Feel the potting mix before you water. A pot with drainage holes makes a big difference.
4. Think about pets and kids
Pothos, peace lily, snake plant and ZZ plant are commonly listed as toxic to cats and dogs, so keep them out of reach or choose pet-safe plants. The ASPCA's plant list is a useful check. Ask your vet if you're unsure. Little ones shouldn't chew houseplants either, so keep them out of reach of children too.
5. Buying plants online
Check where the seller ships to, as some can't send plants to every state because of quarantine rules. Look at the pot size you'll receive, how the plant is packed, and the seller's policy if it arrives damaged. Buying in mild weather can help plants travel better.
6. Give it time to settle
A new plant may drop a leaf or two while it gets used to your home. Keep it out of draughts and away from heaters or air conditioning vents.
