How to check a fare yourself before you book

You've spotted a fare. Before you hand over your money, it's worth five minutes of checking. Here's the routine we use.

1. Go to the airline's own site

Search the same route and dates on the airline's own website. If you saw the fare elsewhere, this tells you whether it's still there and what it costs direct.

2. Check the fare type and inclusions

The same flight can be sold as different fare types. Virgin Australia, for example, sells Lite, Choice, Flex and Business fares on domestic flights, and checked baggage is available to purchase on Lite. Jetstar's Starter fare doesn't include checked baggage. Work out what you'll actually need, and add it in before comparing.

3. Read the change and cancellation rules

Some fares can't be refunded except in certain circumstances, such as under the Australian Consumer Law or the conditions of carriage. If your plans might change, a more flexible fare could cost less overall.

4. Compare dates and airports

Try a few days either side, and nearby airports if they work for you. Compare the total, including bags and seats, not just the headline fare.

5. Check who operates the flight

A flight sold by one airline can be operated by another. The operating airline's carry-on rules may apply. Qantas, for example, says to pack to the lowest allowance if your trip mixes Qantas, Jetstar or partner flights.

6. Check the total before you pay

Look at the final screen for fees and add-ons you didn't choose.

Quick checklist

  • [ ] Fare checked on the airline's own site
  • [ ] Fare type and inclusions understood
  • [ ] Change and cancellation rules read
  • [ ] Nearby dates and airports compared
  • [ ] Operating airline checked
  • [ ] Total checked before paying

We don't list fares here, because they change all the time. Check the airline's own website for current fares and conditions.
