How to spot a genuinely good garden deal (and when to wait)

A big red "SALE" sign doesn't always mean a good price. Here's how we sort the real bargains from the noise. Use these checks before you hit "buy".
1. Check the price over time, not just today
A "was" price is only useful if the item actually sold at that price recently. If you can, look at the same product over a few weeks. Prices for the same item can also differ between states and stores, so always check the retailer's own site for the price where you live.
2. Compare like for like
Garden gear often comes in lots of sizes and bundles. Compare the price per litre of potting mix, per metre of hose or per kilo of fertiliser, not just the sticker price.
3. Buy for your season and your climate
Australia's climates range from tropical to cool temperate. A plant or seed that's "on special" might simply be out of season where you live. Check the planting guide for your climate zone before you buy.
4. Look past the price
Check the warranty, the returns policy and delivery costs. A cheaper tool with no warranty can cost more in the long run. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law's consumer guarantees apply whatever the warranty says. See the ACCC consumer guarantees.
5. Know when to wait
If you don't need it this week, it's often worth waiting. Retailers run sales at different times of year, so put it on a list and check back.
The short version
- A real deal is lower than the price the item genuinely sold for recently.
- Compare by unit, not by sticker.
- Buy for your season and climate.
- Check warranty, returns and delivery.
- If in doubt, wait.
We don't list prices here, because they change and differ by state. Check the retailer's site for the current price where you are.
