Lunchbox basics: bento boxes and drink bottles that last

A good lunchbox and drink bottle can last several school years if you choose well. Here's what to check before you buy.

1. Bento box or classic lunchbox?

Bento-style boxes have built-in compartments, so foods don't squash or mix. Classic boxes are simpler and pair with small containers. Think about what your kids usually eat and how much space their school bag has.

2. Check little hands can open it

Before school starts, let your child practise opening and closing the box and bottle. Clips and lids that are too stiff can mean lunch goes uneaten.

3. Look at materials and cleaning

Common options are plastic, stainless steel and silicone. Check whether parts are dishwasher-safe, whether seals come out for cleaning, and whether spare parts are sold separately.

4. Choose a drink bottle that won't leak

Look for a lid that seals well and is easy to clean. Straw lids are handy but have more parts to wash. Insulated bottles can help keep water cool. Check the bottle fits in the bag's side pocket.

5. Keep cold food cold

On warm days, pack an ice brick or a frozen water bottle with lunch, and use an insulated lunch bag. Food safety guidance from your state or territory health department or Food Standards Australia New Zealand has more general tips (FSANZ food safety basics).

6. Label everything

Put your child's name on the box, lid and bottle. Lost property bins fill up fast.

The short version

  • Choose a box style that suits what your kids eat.
  • Make sure they can open it themselves.
  • Check cleaning and spare parts.
  • Pick a leak-resistant bottle that fits the bag.
  • Pack an ice brick and label everything.
