Mattresses, pillows and bedding: what to look for

A mattress is a big purchase, and pillows and bedding add up. Here's how to shop for comfort and avoid a costly mistake.
1. Mattress firmness and feel
Firmness labels aren't standard between brands. If you can, lie on it in the position you usually sleep in. Think about whether you share the bed, too.
2. Materials
Common types include innerspring, foam, latex and hybrids. Each feels different and varies in how much it moves or holds warmth. Check the materials list rather than relying on names.
3. Trial periods and returns
Many online mattress brands offer home trial periods. Read the fine print: how long, whether you must keep it a minimum time, who arranges pick-up and whether there's a fee. Trials are a store's offer; your consumer guarantees for faulty goods apply regardless.
4. Pillows
Pillow height and firmness are personal. Check the fill, whether it's washable and the return policy, as some stores don't accept pillow returns for hygiene reasons. A store's no-returns policy on pillows doesn't remove your consumer guarantees for faulty goods.
5. Bedding
Look at the fibre (such as cotton, linen or bamboo-derived fabrics), weave and care instructions. Bamboo-derived fabrics are usually sold as viscose or rayon, so check the fibre label. Check size labels match your mattress depth, especially for fitted sheets.
The short version
- Try firmness in your usual position if you can.
- Check materials, not marketing names.
- Read trial and return terms closely.
- Check pillow return rules and bedding sizes.
