Outdoor furniture: what to look for before the summer sales

Outdoor furniture often goes on sale as the weather warms up. Do a little homework first, and you're more likely to buy something that lasts more than one summer.
1. Measure your space
Measure your deck, patio or courtyard, and leave room to walk around chairs and pull them out. A setting that looks small in a store can swamp a balcony.
2. Compare the main materials
| Material | Good to know |
|---|---|
| Aluminium | Light and resists rust. Light pieces can move in strong wind. |
| Timber | Looks warm and natural. Usually needs oiling or sealing to stay looking good. |
| Resin or synthetic wicker | Low care and light. Quality varies, so check the frame underneath. |
| Steel | Sturdy, but check the coating, as bare spots can rust. |
3. Think about sun and shade
Australian sun is harsh. Dark surfaces can get hot to touch, and some fabrics and plastics fade. If your spot gets full sun, look for UV-resistant materials and fabrics, or plan for shade.
4. Check the cushions
Look for removable, washable covers and quick-dry fillings. Ask whether replacement covers are available. Storing cushions out of the weather helps them last.
5. Plan for cleaning and care
Read the care instructions before you buy. Some pieces just need a wipe down. Others need regular oiling or covers over winter.
6. Check warranty and returns
Compare warranty length, returns and delivery. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply whatever the warranty says. See the ACCC consumer guarantees.
