School holidays come round fast. Keeping kids busy doesn't have to cost a lot. Here are some free and low-cost ideas that work almost anywhere in Australia.

1. Visit your local library

Many libraries run free or low-cost holiday programs, as well as lending books, puzzles and sometimes board games. Check your library's website for what's on.

2. Get outside

Parks, playgrounds, beaches, bushwalks and botanic gardens are often free. Pack a picnic and make a day of it. Remember sun protection, water and hats, and check conditions before you head off.

3. Check your council's program

Local councils often run holiday activities, from craft sessions to sports clinics. Some are free and some have a small fee. Places can fill quickly, so book early if needed.

4. Try a backyard project

Plant a few seeds, build a cubby from boxes, start a worm farm or set up a mini obstacle course. Kids can help plan it, which is half the fun.

5. Cook together

Let the kids pick a simple recipe, write the shopping list and help cook. It's a good way to practise reading and measuring.

6. Craft with what you've got

Cardboard boxes, paper, tape and old magazines go a long way. Keep a "craft box" topped up through the year.

7. Swap with other families

Take turns minding each other's kids for a morning with families you know and trust. Everyone gets a break, and kids get time with friends.

The short version

  • Libraries and councils often run free or cheap programs.
  • Parks, beaches and walks cost little or nothing.
  • Backyard projects and cooking keep kids busy.
  • Keep a craft box handy.
  • Share the load with other families.
