Web hosting is renting space on someone else's computer so your website is online all the time. There are three common types, and the right one depends on how much you want to tinker.

1. Shared hosting

Your site sits on a server alongside many others. It's the simplest and usually the cheapest option, and the host looks after the server. The trade-off is less control, and a busy neighbour can slow things down. It suits blogs, small business sites and hobby projects.

2. VPS (virtual private server)

You get your own slice of a server, with set resources and full control. You're usually responsible for setting it up, updating it and securing it. It's great if you're comfortable on the command line; less great if you're not.

3. Managed hosting

The host runs the technical side for you, often for one platform such as WordPress: updates, backups, security and support. You pay for the convenience but spend less time on maintenance.

4. What to check whatever you choose

  • Backups: how often, and how easy are restores?
  • Support: hours, and whether it's in Australian time zones.
  • Data centre location, if speed for Aussie visitors matters.
  • Free SSL certificate (the padlock in the browser).
  • Introductory versus renewal pricing, and how to cancel.

5. Moving later

You're not locked in forever. Most sites can be moved to another host, and many hosts help with migrations. Start simple and upgrade when you need to.

The short version

  • Shared: simple, hands-off, fine for most small sites.
  • VPS: more control, but you look after it.
  • Managed: convenient, less maintenance.
  • Always check backups, support, SSL and renewal terms.

We don't list prices here, because they change and differ by state. Check the provider's own site for current prices and plans.
