Wellness apps: what to check before subscribing

Affiliate disclosure:We don't have any affiliate links yet. When we do, we'll label every one and we may earn a commission when you buy through it. It won't change the price you pay. How we're paid

There are apps for workouts, meditation, journaling, meal planning and more. Before you hand over card details, run through these checks.

1. What you actually get

Look at the free content or trial and check the features that matter to you are included in the plan, not extra.

2. Trials and renewals

Many trials roll into a paid plan automatically. Put a reminder in your calendar before the trial ends, and know whether you'll be billed monthly or yearly.

3. Cancelling

Find out how to cancel before you subscribe. If you signed up through an app store, you usually cancel there, not in the app. The ACCC has warned consumers about subscription traps.

4. Your data

Wellness apps can collect sensitive information. Read the privacy policy: what's collected, where it's stored, whether it's shared and how to delete it. The OAIC explains your privacy rights.

5. Claims

Be cautious of apps that promise health outcomes. An app isn't a replacement for advice from your GP or health professional.

The short version

  • Check what's in the plan.
  • Set a reminder before trials end.
  • Know how to cancel.
  • Read the privacy policy.
  • Be wary of health promises.

We don't list prices here, because they change and differ by state. Check the provider's own site for current plans.
